Episode 121 – Thanksgiving Crossover Special

DJCH COV 750

This week, the Comedy on Vinyl podcast and the Dan and Jay’s Comedy Hour podcast cross paths.  Right in the middle of wrapping up their latest sketch comedy album Ho, Christmas Tree!, an increasingly drunk Jay (Jason to you vinyl folks) and Dan discuss the creation of this, the SMALLEST COMEDY ALBUM IN HISTORY.  At 1.7cm square, the album comes packaged on a MicroSD card packed with the album and audio and video extras.

It’s also a FREE download, available at ho.stolendress.com, with CDs available shortly thereafter.   It’s a sketch album, naturally, featuring the talents of James Urbaniak, Philip Proctor of The Firesign Theatre, Jeremy Guskin, Allen Rueckert and a number of other wonderful talents.

Episode 120 – Andie Bolt, Jeremy Guskin and Allen Rueckert on Ghostbusters

boltbustersFor her second time around on the show, the hilarious Andie Bolt talks about the soundtrack to a great movie, “Ghostbusters,” and tells us about her own film, “WowMom,” which is about her mom coping with cancer by playing World of Warcraft, which you can donate to here.  We’re also joined by Jeremy and Allen, both friends of the show and two of my co-stars in “Ghostbusters: A Drinking Game.”

Also, my first sketch album in 13 years – and the smallest comedy album in history at 1.2cm square – comes out next Tuesday, November 15.  Go to ho.stolendress.com on the day of and you’ll be able to download “Ho, Christmas Tree!” by Dan and Jay’s Comedy Hour for free, purchase the smallest comedy album in the world physically, and get information on where to buy the CD when it comes out shortly thereafter.

Episode 119 – Jimmy Pardo on Richard Lewis – Im In Pain

pardoOh, this guy’s the best.  Jimmy Pardo wanted to talk about Richard Lewis’s TV special “I’m In Pain,” so we discuss the influence of Richard and a slew of other comedians on Jimmy’s style, as well as Jimmy’s jump out of the square world of the music industry to do comedy full-time.  We also talk about the importance of having a partner in comedy, even for a stand-alone stand-up.

Also, don’t forget to check out the amazing Pardcast-a-thon ’14, which benefits the wonderful Smile Train charity.

Episode 118 – Steve Stajich on Welcome to the LBJ Ranch

StajichSteve Stajich is a satirist, musician, sitcom writer, former stand-up, and comedy guru to up-and-comers.  He’s also one of mycomedy mentors, so it was a blast sitting down with him to talk about an album he has a personal/professional connection with.  The product of a bygone era where cutting in the interviews of real political figures with questions by comedians was neither easy nor played out, “Welcome to the LBJ Ranch” is a fun listen.

Episode 117 – Wayne White on Richard Pryor – Wanted

WayneWhiteIf you don’t know Wayne White’s name, you owe it to yourself to go watch “Beauty is Embarrassing” immediately and feel bad that his name passed you by the millions of times you’ve seen it.  Part of Wayne and his work is in Pee Wee’s Playhouse, Beakman’s World, and the Smashing Pumpkins music video for “Tonight, Tonight,” just to name the three things that are quickest to name.  He’s a brilliant painter (see a tiny portion of a mural of his in the photo above) and comedy appreciator and mixes the two wonderfully with his word paintings, which he intends to simply entertain his audience.  He’s inspiring, insightful, and he likes funny shit.  Listen to why he picked this amazing double-album from Richard Pryor.

Episode 116 – Carlos Alazraqui on Cheech and Chong – Los Cochinos

Alazraqui

The amazing Carlos Alazraqui stops by his own house to discuss Los Cochinos, which comes with a nice personal story involving the one and only Cheech Marin.  We actually recorded this one quite awhile back, but I thought it’d be fun to revisit with a new perspective on the album sooner, rather than later.

Episode 115 – Dan Pasternack on George Carlin – Take Offs and Put Ons

Pasternack

Consummate comedy nerd, comedy vinyl collector and comedian in his own right (yes, he had a song played on Dr. Demento’s show when he was 11), Dan Pasternack is here to talk Carlin’s “Take Offs and Put Ons,” not to mention putting most people’s comedy stories to shame with one encounter involving both George Carlin and Stan Freberg.  Enjoy, and be sure to read his articles on McSweeney’s about his comedy vinyl collection.

Episode 114 – Dave Kloc on Mitch Hedberg – Mitch All Together

DaveKlocThat album we’re holding is indeed not Mitch Hedberg’s “Mitch All Together.”  That’s because A) It wasn’t released on vinyl and B) the gentleman next to Jason, here, is Dave Kloc, the designer of this amazing album cover for Jonah Ray’s “Hello Mr. Magic Plane Person, Hello.”  Not only that, but Dave has designed every single poster for every single Meltdown show here in Los Angeles and, of course, on your TV screens.  We talk serious comedy addiction, art, and Mitch Hedberg this week.
