Episode 164 – Caitlin Barlow and Kathryn Renee Thomas on Monty Python Sings

BarlowTHomasSD

Two of the creators and co-stars of TV Land’s Teachers, which premieres January 13th, picked my favorite Python album, and the thing that really got me addicted to Monty Python in general.  Monty Python Sings is drenched in the best the group has to offer, musically, and we break it down, track by track.  We also talk about how bangable Monty Python are individually.  Also, before you ask, yes, it had a vinyl release, but in Europe, so it’s impossible (so far and for me) to find.

Episode 141 – James Bladon and Jeremy Guskin on Monty Python – The Holy Grail Soundtrack

bladon

This week I’m joined by the amazingly talented James Bladon (the music for Superego and their alter-egos The Journeymen and the music editor for countless TV shows) and my great friend and talented person in his own right Jeremy Guskin to discuss (deep breath) “The Album Of The Soundtrack Of The Trailer Of The Film Of Monty Python And The Holy Grail.”  It would’ve been worth talking about it even if it was 50 minutes of movie clips, but the fact that this is a great album on its own is actually quite a spectacular feat.  They took the time to make this album seem like it was a tossed-off (bad choice of words, I know), last-minute money-grab, when in fact it’s filled with solid sketches.

Episode 103 – Matt Gourley on Monty Python – The Final Rip Off

GourleyOne-quarter sketch group, one-quarter country band, 2 quarters comedy enthusiast, Matt Gourley joins us this week to talk about Monty Python’s The Final Rip Off, an important album for both of us.  We talk improv, sketch, and specifically Monty Python’s influence on his work with the amazing podcast/improv-sketch group Superego, which you probably already know comes back September 1st with new episodes and with additional Paul F. Tompkins’s.  I had a blast talking about this great double-album, which, while yet another compilation, might be the ultimate packing-in of the best of Monty Python, in terms of what works as audio-only sketch comedy.

Episode 33 – Live! With David Anthony Higgins and James Urbaniak on The Monty Python Matching Tie and Handkerchief

I will remember Memorial Day 2012 as a night of nerddom.  Look at that picture.  Even Jeremy is wearing thick-rimmed glasses in spirit.  This week, we talk with two of my favorite character actors of all time, David Anthony Higgins and James Urbaniak.  Jeremy is one of those, too, but he’s too much of a regular to really emphasize.  That’s a lie – I was so busy being amazed, Jeremy does most of the talking.

This is just an amazing, insane album from the gents at Monty Python with a HIDDEN SIDE to it.  It will go down in history simply for having two tracks side-by-side, so designed that the listener was likely to hear something different each time, causing innumerable aneurysms.  It gives us the best version of the Cheese Shop sketch, and it also was originally packaged as the free gift with an actual matching tie and handkerchief.  You don’t get albums-as-art anymore, so it’s a treasure.
