Episode 182 – Jeff Morris on Bad News

COV_182_SD

Dr. Demento’s archivist, memory acrobat and comedy lover, Jeff Morris picked a US re-release of an album by the UK “group” Bad News, featuring two members of The Young Ones and two other English comedians in an early-80s rock music parody that paralleled This Is Spinal Tap.

Episode 181 – Aline Brosh McKenna on Fiddler on the Roof

COV_181_SD

Okay, so I give my guests the options of some things that aren’t strictly comedy, when those things inspired them and at least have some comedic elements to them.  Aline Brosh McKenna (The Devils Wears Prada, 27 Dresses AND co-creator of friend of the show Rachel Bloom’s wonderful show Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) took me up on the challenge and picked Fiddler on the Roof with Zero Mostel.  There are plenty of comedic songs in Fiddler, and Zero Mostel could be funny falling down a set of stairs.

BONUS: Rob Kutner talks about his new project, Runaway Brains, co-starring Ken Jennings, Weird Al, Michael Ian Black, Lauren Lapkus and a bunch of others.  Listen on howl.fm or get the first three free here: http://apple.co/1XjUw1c

Episode 180 – Billy Merritt on George Carlin – Take-Offs and Put-Ons

COV_180_SD

You’ve seen Billy Merritt on numerous shows.  If you’re lucky enough (like our own producer, Mike), Billy has taught you improv at UCB.  We had a great time talking about the mind-changing effect Carlin and this album had on how Billy thought about comedy.

Episode 23 – Weird Al – Even Worse – With Rachel Bloom

Yes, he’s a God.  He’s the nicest man on the planet, and I’ve shaken his hand.  Yes, you needed to know that.  This is one of his tightest albums, containing some of his best originals.

She makes funny songs like “Fuck Me, Ray Bradbury” and “I Steal Pets,” and is about to write for a sketch show on Cartoon Network.  She’s Rachel Bloom and she was kind enough to sit down and talk with us about the man, the myth, the (formerly) mustachioed, Weird Al.  Also, dreams and dicks.

Episode 21 – Lenny Bruce – I Am Not a Nut, Elect Me! – With Matt Besser

If you think of Lenny Bruce, you probably think of the guy who took on censorship and was a martyr for the cause of free speech.  Maybe you’ve seen the movie “Lenny” and associate him with Dustin Hoffman’s huggable heroin addict.  Your first thought might not be that Lenny Bruce was a guy who told jokes.  And that’s why we’re here.

Luckily, this week we’ve got backup, in the form of Matt Besser, master improviser and brilliant comedic actor.  Though he might not point you to this album to discover Lenny Bruce, this is the album that clearly blew his mind and was integral in his understanding of his own craft.  Listen in, listen up, and check this album out.
