Episode 227 – Bermuda Schwartz

Bermuda Schwartz has almost always been a drummer.  One day he proposed that Weird Al might need a band.  Comedy history was made that day, and its apparent to no one more than Bermuda, who continues to drum for Weird Al and act as his archivist.   Bermuda talks about his influences, his archiving work and has work as a musician.

Episode 161 – Julia Prescott on Weird Al – Mandatory Fun

PrescottSD

Julia is a stand-up and the host of the Simpsons podcast “Everything’s Coming Up Podcast!” and she decided to do something unusual.  She picked an album only a year old – the newest vinyl album we’ve ever talked about on the show.  Weird Al’s Mandatory Fun, regardless of age, is classic Al, so that’s more than enough reason to talk about it at length.  We also discuss his live shows, what a nice guy is – all the usual stuff.

Episode 149 – Craig Rowin on Weird Al – Off The Deep End

Craig Rowin SDCraig Rowin of Your Pretty Face is Going To Hell drops by (and so do I, this was “on location” in Hollywood) to talk about Weird Al’s perfectly-timed “Off The Deep End.”  Now, before you write me an e-mail about this being a CD-era album, I’d advise you to go to the Netherlands.  Where they released this album on vinyl, apparently.  Craig squeaked it, but I’m glad he did.  This has one of my all-time top Weird Al songs, and we had a blast talking about (individually) meeting Weird Al, as well as, in his case, working with him.

Episode 138 – Dr. Demento

demento_SD

He inspired the guy who inspired this podcast.  He’s the ultimate curator of novelty music, a music historian, an expert on the history of recorded sound and of comedy, and he was the sound of a generation of comedy lovers.  He might have invented what it means to be a comedy nerd, whether you grew up listening to him on terrestrial radio, or not.  We sat down to talk about his personal history with music and with comedy.

Comedy on Vinyl on YouTube

As a quick reminder, we’re on YouTube!  While you can find us on iTunes, Stitcher, Blubrry and BeyondPod, among (probably) others, we also have selected episodes on YouTube.  At the time of posting, it’s just episodes 1-3 (yes, the weirdest ones), but soon we’ll be uploading the best episodes, in order, starting with Episode 4, Richard Pryor’s …Is It Something I Said?

Episode 58 – Eric Martin on Weird Al – UHF

Eric Martin

This week I sit down with the mahogany-voiced Eric Martin of the This American Wife podcast and Web Series.  It’s quickly becoming one of my favorite things, so it was exciting that Eric picked a Weird Al album we haven’t done before.  Apologies for the hot sound in advance, but I think it’s worth it.

allen & mitch 1

This week, my awesome pals and frequent A Drinking Game Collaborators Allen Rueckert & Mitch Yapko came over to Fort Awesome Studios to talk about Weird Al’s “Bad Hair Day.”  Also – Mike’s back!  We have a lot of fun talking about how Weird Al influenced Allen’s stand up, and also the insanely wonderful work both Mitch and Allen are doing outside of my podcast.

Episode 23 – Weird Al – Even Worse – With Rachel Bloom

Yes, he’s a God.  He’s the nicest man on the planet, and I’ve shaken his hand.  Yes, you needed to know that.  This is one of his tightest albums, containing some of his best originals.

She makes funny songs like “Fuck Me, Ray Bradbury” and “I Steal Pets,” and is about to write for a sketch show on Cartoon Network.  She’s Rachel Bloom and she was kind enough to sit down and talk with us about the man, the myth, the (formerly) mustachioed, Weird Al.  Also, dreams and dicks.
